About this site
This site is a patchwork of paintings, drawings and ruminations of David Werner (full name, David Bradford Werner) who is best known internationally for his pioneering work in Primary Health Care and Community Based Rehabilitation. His village healthcare handbook, Where There Is No Doctor -- with hundreds of his lively line drawings -- has been translated into 90 languages and is used by community health workers throughout the majority world.
Born in 1934, David is director of HealthWrights (Workgroup for People's Health and Rights), a small non-profit organization based in Palo Alto, California. While much of his adult life has focused on the health and empowerment of disadvantaged people, David is a biologist by training. His deep love of nature and of children is reflected in his art. The spirit of his life and art was influenced in his adolescence by a naturalist and social activist who became his intimate friend and mentor. In the searching years of his vagrant twenties additional important influences were the Gandhian land-reform movement in India and a Zen artist in Japan.
